War in the neighborhood: IPN update

If Moldova puts its generals in a column, a battalion will be formed...

The Ukrainian press reported that President Maia Sandu underlined the necessity of arming the nation’s military with modern equipment to be prepared for a potential attack from Russia. Sandu noted that the government is obliged to ensure the protection of the country’s citizens, but the Moldovan army will be unable to cope if the same tragedy as in Ukraine happens.

Moldova, among states with largest number of refugees

Poland became a leader in the European Union by the number of welcomed Ukrainian refugees. A number of 1 221 596 Ukrainian refugees were officially registered in the country by July 11.

Approximately 900,000 Ukrainians found refuge in Germany, 391,000 – in the Czech Republic, about 150,000 – in Turkey and Italy, slightly over 80,000 in Moldova, Romania and Slovakia.

The Kremlin will continue the war

Russia intends to continue the war against Ukraine until it achieves its objectives, said the Russian Foreign Ministry’s representative Maria Zakharova, who didn’t specify what objectives she meant. The regime in Russia changed radically these goals for several times so far.

Vladimir Putin signs law on so-called special measures in the economy. In accordance with the law, the Government of the Russian Federation is granted the right to make decisions on the introduction of special measures in the economic sphere in order to ensure operations outside Russia. With the introduction of special measures in the economy, the Cabinet of Ministers may temporarily reactivate mobilization capacities and facilities, and disperse the tangible assets of the state reserve.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, not only the Ukrainians started to speak about the necessity of dismembering the Russian Federation into a number of states. For example, Nobel Peace Laureate and former President of Poland Lech Walesa called for the population of Russia to be reduced to 50 million people, Figaro reported.

There are 60 nations living there who (the Russians) swallowed them as they swallow all Ukrainians today. We are obliged to help these nations to rise up. It is necessary either to change the Russian political system or to reduce the Russian population to less than 50 million people,” said Walesa.

According to him, it is necessary "to force the change of the political system in the country, to organize popular uprisings".

The former President of Poland agrees with the statement that the West seeks to expand its sphere of influence. But he does it through "democratic means". "Russia is doing it through violence," Walesa emphasized.

HIMARS send AK-47 and T-72 to melting...

The Armed Forces of Ukraine already destroyed over 30 military logistics unit of Russia with HIMARS, said the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense Alexandr Motuzyanik. The offensive potential of the Russian troops was significantly reduced.

Motuzyanik also said that Ukraine expects the lend-lease will have a very positive effect as the types of weapons and military equipment needed at the moment could be chosen.

They fly, but not all – only half

Ukrainian air defense systems shoot down an average of half of Russian missiles, Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov stated in an interview with the BBC.

“If our air defense did not work, there would be many times more horror and fear. 50% of the missiles that fly into our cities are shot down by our air defense systems. This is an average statistics,” the minister noted.

The head of the Ministry of Defense emphasized that no air defense system can guarantee 100% protection against missiles. As an example, he cited the Israeli missile defense system "Iron Dome", which guarantees protection at the level of 80%.

He also said that the Western partners are preparing to deliver two NASAMS air defense systems, but these are not enough.

Lungs suffer because of bullet in leg

The European Union has “shot itself in the lungs” with ill-considered economic sanctions on Russia, which, unless rolled back, risk destroying the European economy, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday.

Gas supplies to Europe have tightened and fuel costs have soared since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February and subsequent sanctions, leaving countries scrambling to refill storage and diversify supply channels.

“Initially, I thought we had only shot ourselves in the foot, but now it is clear that the European economy has shot itself in the lungs, and it is gasping for air,” stated Orban..

Thousands of cases and first convictions

The United States and more than 40 other countries agreed on Thursday to coordinate investigations into suspected war crimes in Ukraine, shortly after what Kyiv said was a Russian missile strike that killed civilians far from front lines.

The countries signed a declaration to that effect after a conference in The Hague headquarters of the International Criminal Court.

With more than 20,000 war crimes investigations now open and different countries heading teams, evidence needs to be credible and organized, officials said. The ICC has sent the largest field team in its 20-year history to investigate in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova announced six sentences related to the war in Ukraine passed by ordinary law courts. The current proceedings feature 127 persons.
