Roads in over 1,000 villages to be repaired in 2018

More than 1,200 kilometers of road sections in over 1,000 villages all over the country will be repaired in the course of this year. The central public authorities plan to spend about 1.6 billion lei from own sources and from the donations made by foreign partners, such as the EBRD, EIB and World Bank, for repairing these, Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated in a meeting with mayors and district heads staged by the Government in the context of the Festival “Martsishor”, IPN reports.

“I invited you not only to the opening of the Festival “Martsishor”, but also to discussions with representatives of the local public authorities on two issues that are important and fundamental for Moldova. I refer first of all to the national project “Good Roads for Moldova”, which is a very important infrastructure project. The Government, together with the country’s foreign partners, plans to allocate money for repairing at least 1,200 km of roads in rural areas. These roads have always been a kind of Cinderella and were neglected as priority was given to the roads of international importance. Now we want the people in rural areas to have good roads in villages so that they stop treading mud. Surely we will not neglect the construction of the national roads. You should weigh every cost as we have a unique chance of transforming the country into a modern building site,” stated Pavel Filip.

Secretary of State at the Ministry of Construction and Road Building Anatol Usatyi said the criteria that will be used to choose the road sectors that will be repaired were agreed together with representatives of the Road Agency and the local authorities. “The works will be launched in May and will be carried out simultaneously in a number of districts. The bidders can apply to repair concurrently different sections in different villages. These will be community roads, ways of access to schools, kindergartens and medical centers,” stated Anatol Usatyi.

As regards the repair of national roads, among the priorities are the Cimislia-Comrat-Giurgiulesti and Chisinau-Ungheni (bypassing Ungheni town) and Balti-Sarateni roads. In this connection, the officials noted that some of the entrepreneurs didn’t fulfill their obligations and the roads weren’t repaired in due time, like the Hancesti-Leova-Cahul, Soroca-Arionesti and Balti-Falesti-Sculeni roads. The contracts for the repair of these roads were terminated and new tender contests will be announced soon.

The meeting with mayors and district heads was organized by the Government in connection with the International Music Festival “Martsishor” that will take place during March 1-10.
