Serghei Carp, director of the Green Spaces municipal agency, will be fired after last week’s accident when a fallen tree limb killed a 2-year-old girl in a Chisinau park. This was announced by Mayor Ion Ceban, following a brief internal probe.
The mayor also asked the leadership of the governmental Environment Agency to resign, holding them responsible for red tape in issuing tree trimming and removal permits.
In particular, Ceban accused the Agency of ignoring requests for tree care permits “for months”, making prompt interventions difficult.
Despite the intention to sack Carp, Ceban said the internal probe showed no “malice” on the official’s part.
The commission that conducted the probe recommended that the future Green Spaces director initiate a deeper investigation to quiz the deputy director and senior arborists in charge of the area where the accident happened.
On Monday, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced it opened a criminal investigation to determine whether last Saturday’s death was a case of penal negligence.
