Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs transfers €300,000 intended for Moldova to EED

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania already paid the voluntary contribution of €300,000 through the European Endowment for Democracy (EED) for implementing projects in support of civil society and the independent press in the Republic of Moldova. The contribution was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu during his official visit to the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports, quoting the Embassy of Romania.

The given financial assistance was allocated in accordance with Romania’s support package intended for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova that was announced by the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis in Chisinau in December 2020. The contribution was transferred from the Democratization and Sustainable Development Fund for the Republic of Moldova, being included in the annual international cooperation plan for development and humanitarian assistance for 2021.

According to the Romanian diplomatic service, Minister Bogdan Aurescu’s decision is a follow-up to the decision to provide a voluntary contribution of €250,000 taken last November. That money was also intended for projects in support of civil society and the independent press in the Republic of Moldova.

The Embassy said that by this measure, it is reiterated Romania’s firm commitment to support the European course of the Republic of Moldova, including by official development assistance actions and in accordance with the bilateral Strategic Partnership for the European Integration of the Republic of Moldova.

The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is an independent, grant-making organization, established in 2013 by the European Union (EU) and EU member states as an autonomous International Trust Fund to foster democracy in the European Neighborhood.
