Igor Sharov: Ties between researchers from Moldova and Romania are close, regardless of government that is in power

The ties between the researchers of Moldova and Romania have always been close, regardless of governments that were in power in the two states or the ideologies promoted during particular periods of time, the rector of the Moldova State University Igor Sharov stated in a public debate hosted by IPN.

“Between ministries, there were either strong or weak relations, but regardless of these, the ties between researchers have been kept in time. The universities were a kind of bastions that promoted science, the Romanian language and literature,” stated Igor Sharov.

Asked what was omitted in the relations between Moldova and Romania in time and where more effort can be made in education and research, Igor Sharov said that only time can show this.

The USM rector considers the economy of a country and its educational system, the research system are interconnected, while the investments that are made today also with the support of Romania will produce results in time, not immediately. “We must realize that results do not come immediately. The results from investments come during a longer period of time. We are an independent and sovereign state. The language, history and heritage problems should be a predilection for any government. There is only one conclusion: without adequate financing, we should not wait for results and should not wonder why the young people do not come to science,” said the rector.

The ex-minister of education noted that without adequate financing, results will not be achieved as the number of enthusiasts has declined. The young generation is much more pragmatic and wants to see results now. “A whole complex of ideas is needed or we will be looking for those who are to blame because the young people are not coming.”

Igor Sharov said a populist approach in this regard should not be adopted and a broader view is needed, based on the idea that the results in a well-thought-out educational system are also the results of the economy. The national economy needs to be strengthened.

The public debate entitled “Integration through training and research, Moldovan-Romanian educational projects” was staged in the framework of the project “Double integration through cooperation and information”, which is implemented by IPN News Agency with support from the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania.
