The Speaker of Parliament, the Premier and the President in the morning of August 27 laid flowers at the Grieving Mother Monument of the Memorial Complex “Eternity” and at the Monument to Ruler Stephan the Great on the occasion of the Independence Day. Nearby, the antigovernment protest continued. The crowd chanted “Thieves”, “Down with the mafia!”, “Traitors!”. Hundreds of police officers formed cordons to isolate the protesters from the senior state officials, IPN reports.
The protesters also booed the participants in the National Costume Parade, who marched from the National Opera House “Maria Bieșu” along Ștefan cel Mare Blvd and then danced a Romanian round dance in the Great National Assembly Square. A festive concert dedicated to Moldova’s Independence Day will take place later today at the National Palace “Nicolae Sulac”.
After the protest mounted by the National Resistance Movement ACUM on August 26, a part of the participants remained overnight near the Monument to Ruler Stephan the Great and in the central square of Chisinau. In the morning, the police demanded that the protesters should temporally change the place of the protest, until the festivities are over. As the crowed refused to comply, the police forced the protesters to go away. The protesters chanted: “We will not give up!”, “Shame!”, “Down with dictatorship”, “Defend the people, not the usurper!”, “Criminals!”
The Monument to Ruler Stephan the Great was surrounded by police cordons that were formed on Bănulescu-Bodoni St and Ștefan cel Mare Blvd and in the Public Garden “Ștefan cel Mare”.
