Moldovan soldiers who died in battle in the Afghanistan war were remembered today, February 15, at the Memorial Complex “Holy Memory to the Sons of Motherland” in Chisinau. The event was held on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the withdrawal of the limited contingent of armed forces from Afghanistan, IPN reports.

Prime Minister Ion Chicu said in the event that this day is an occasion for commemorating those who fearlessly went to war, their courageous and heroism. ”Let’s pray together for peace and wisdom in the Republic of Moldova,” he urged.

Gennady Yurko, adviser to the President of Moldova, transmitted Igor Dodon’s message, saying that even if over three decades have passed, the memory of the battles that took place in Afghanistan remains vivid also in the conscience of the current generations. “In memory of the heroes who made sacrifices, showed courage and stoicism, we are obliged to avoid any form of discrimination, hatred and intolerance as nothing can be above peace and freedom,” he said.

According to Minister of Defense Victor Gaiciuc, more than 10,000 Moldovans went through the Afghanistan war. 301 died in battle, while about 600 were hurt. “The war in Afghanistan became history, but left a deep and painful imprint on our hearts,” he noted.

Eduard Gumeniuc, secretary of the Council of the Afghanistan War Veterans Union, said he returned from war with a wound in the soul that continues to bleed. He remained with a scar that will never heal. He voiced hope that they will be the last veterans with fighting experience on earth and there will be no more wars.

Commemoration events were also held in other parts of the country.
