A man, 59, was struck to death by a semi-trailer truck near the entrance to Orhei city. According to the police, the man was hit as he tried to jaywalk across an unlit stretch of the road in an attempt to get to a taxicab waiting for him.
The National Patrol Inspectorate (INP) said the driver of the truck is a 69-year-old man.
Per INP data, 173 traffic accidents involving jaywalkers occurred from the beginning of the year, resulting in 24 fatalities and 150 people being injured.
INP is urging pedestrians to always use crossings where available, and motorists to comply with speed limits in order to be able to react.
