New aid package for Moldova. Romanian Premier: We continue energy exports

Romania’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting said that a major decision today concerns the new aid package for Moldova, adopted by an emergency ordinance, IPN reports.

“First of all, we continue to export energy – an essential measure for the economic survival of our brothers. Thus, Russia’s plan to bring the Republic of Moldova to its knees, using the energy weapon, failed,” said Marcel Ciolacu.

One of the issues on the agenda of the meeting is a draft emergency ordinance referring to the electricity and natural gas market. According to the draft, in cases when the Republic of Moldova cannot ensure national electricity consumption through its own production, electricity producers have the obligation to conclude bilateral contracts within the limits of available quantities, primarily  with electricity traders/suppliers designated by the Government of the Republic of Moldova for this purpose. The electricity sold under these conditions covers exclusively the consumption needs of final consumers in the Republic of Moldova.

The draft ordinance makes reference to the persistent risks, noting that the war triggered by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and its consequences continue to significantly affect the energy security of the Republic of Moldova, to which the unpredictable situation in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova is added.

Education is also covered by the bilateral agreement. There is a draft decision on granting financing from the budget reserve fund available to the Romanian Government, which was earmarked in the 2024 state budget, for the project “Extensive reconstruction of student dormitory No.3 of the B.P. Hasdeu State University in Cahul”. It was proposed by Moldova based on the “Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on the implementation of the technical and financial assistance program based on €100 million noneimbursable financial aid provided by Romania to the Republic of Moldova”.
