“The Union of Moldavia and Wallachia occurred by a wise decision of the then legislative bodies. Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected ruler of Moldavia and ruler of Wallachia, laying this way the basis of modern Romania,” Romania’s Ambassador in Chisinau Daniel Ioniță stated in an event staged by the Embassy of Romania in Moldova on the occasion of the 163rd anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, on January 24, 1859, IPN reports.
The anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities this year coincides with the 160th anniversary of the formation of the first Government led by Barbu Catargiu and the first Legislative Assembly of the United Principalities, on January 24, 1862. On this occasion, the post of minister of foreign affairs was introduced in the Government of Romania, while the Department of Foreign and State Affairs was founded on July 27/August 8, 1862. “This way, we have 160 years of government of Romania and 160 years of Romanian diplomatic relations,” stated Ambassador Daniel Ioniță.
“It is an occasion for saying that we will further believe in our dear Romania, in a modern, democratic Romania, in a Romania that is now EU and NATO members, and in a Romania that was, is and will always be near the Republic of Moldova that we also want to be near us, in the big European family,” stated the Romanian diplomat.
In the diplomatic event, representatives of the Embays of Romania and of public associations and political parties of the Republic of Moldova laid flowers at the bust to Ruler Alexandru Ion Cuza situated at the intersection of Dacia Blvd and Cuza Vodă St in Botanica St of Chisinau. An artistic group sang patriotic songs and danced the Union Dance.
In an anniversary message, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Bogdan Aurescu said that at strategic level, the Union of the Romanian Principalities reminds of the necessity of ensuring Romania’s foreign policy in the long run remains a national consensus theme, supporting the sustainable building of internal and external resilience of the state and the pursed major objectives, including at the foreign level.
