The Democratic Party’s candidate Ion Mereuță tops the list of candidates on the ballot. He is a jurist by profession and now works as a professor at the University of European Studies of Moldova, the Public Law Department. After the local elections of last autumn, he became a member of the Hâncești District Council.
Between 1978 and 2012, he worked in the customs sector and was promoted up to the post of division head in the central staff of the Customs Service. In 2016, when he held the post of secretary of the Hâncești district organization of the Democratic Party, he was named chief of the Hâncești local office of the State Chancellery.
Ion Mereuță was conferred departmental and state awards. In 1996, for essential contribution to improving customs control, to fluidizing goods and passenger traffic and for high professionalism, he was awarded the Civic Merit medal.
For the period between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019, Ion Mereuță declared over 313,000 lei salaries received from the State Chancellery and more than 3,000 lei earned at the University of European Studies of Moldova. His wife in the period earned almost 113,000 lei salaries and bonuses. The two sold a car and a building and earned almost 250,000 lei proceeds. Ion Mereuță also got over 156,000 lei pensions and more than 43,000 lei allowances for being dismissed from the State Chancellery. The family owns two lots of land, a piece of farmland, a house, a garage, two cars and other property.
In a news conference earlier, Ion Mereuță said that as he is from Hâncești, he knows well the needs of the locals and is ready to represent them responsibly in Parliament.
Ion Mereuță, 67, is married and has two children.
The Central Election Commission set new parliamentary elections in Hâncești for March 15 after Democratic MP Alexandru Botnari renounced the seat of MP won in this constituency in favor of the post of mayor of Hâncești municipality that he secured in the November 3 mayoral runoffs.
