Data about waste management at national level accessible in one place

The data about waste management at national level can be now seen in one place, portal, in the division “Statistics”. This is an accomplishment of the pilot project titled “Statistics about waste, key facilitator for circular economy”. The data were collected by the Association for Waste Recovery during six months, IPN reports.

The project was implemented in April-September 2021. Aurelia Bahnaru, president of the Association for Waste Recovery, said they first finalized the online module “Waste Statistics” that is divided into six categories: “Authorized operators”, “Standard waste authorizations”, “Sanitation taxes and tariffs”, “Generated waste (thousand tonnes)”, “Waste dumps”, “Search for standard waste authorizations, operators, region”. In the future, there will be added other categories. The data were obtained from the Environmental Agency, the Environmental Protection Inspectorate and the Nationals Bureau of Statistics. The modules will be periodically updated.

According to Aurelia Bahnaru, such modules should be present on the websites of local and central public authorities so as to ensure the correct management of data. In the framework of the project, there were staged four online workshops that involved over 120 participants and designed a guide entitled “Planning and Assessment Guide. Waste Management System”.

The project was financed by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) with funds of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC).

Diana Celac, programs manager at ADA, said that what was achieved with the assistance of the project is a new approach to waste management and this can help to better realize the sources of statistical data existing at the national level. The way in which the data on waste management in the past 20 years can be now seen can help improve the capacities to understand and to deal with environmental challenges.

Svetlana Boloca, head of the Ministry of the Environment’s Waste and Chemicals Management Department, noted that without statistics, the solving of problems related to waste management cannot be stimulated. That’s why any activity based on data collection is important for Moldova.

The value of the project is about €10,000 that was allocated in grant funding.
