The request of former commissioner of Chisinau Vladimir Botnari to prosecute the journalist who made public personal data can become a dangerous precedent for investigative journalism, said invitees to the talk show “Interpol” produced by TV7 channel, IPN reports.
Journalist Ion Terguta said the recent attacks on media outlets form part of the efforts aimed at monopolizing the press. “They try to destroy the journalists who reveal information about functionaries so that these do not suffer the consequences in the election campaign. In different institutions, the people are requested to present copies of the identity card where there are all the personal data, while the prosecutors do not investigate this,” he stated.
Maria Levcenco, presenter at the channel “Realitatea TV”, said the attacks on journalists are possible because these mounted different barricades and when something happens in the guild, a part does not react because it is in on the other side of the barricade. The journalist made a call for journalistic solidarity.
Alina Radu, director of the newspaper “Ziarului de Garda”, said the journalists of the publication that she represents must cope with numerous attacks. “Every time we write something about a representative of the Democratic Party, the trolls attack us with different postings and comments. We had been and continue to be involved in trials. The authorities have their press and the journalists who want to work independently and to analyze governance together with the people are constrained. This happens during a government that pretends to be pro-European,” stated Alina Radu.
Ex-commissioner of Chisinau Vladimir Botnari, who was acquitted in the April 7 case by the Supreme Court of Justice, filed a complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office, asking that journalist Mariana Rata, of the Journalistic Investigations Center, should be held accountable for publishing personal data about his family.
Mariana Rata said that besides the name of the ex-functionary who was recently employed by the national phone carrier Moldtelecom, hasn’t published other personal data. “It was a news article. Who read it saw that I wrote only ”his wife and daughter”. I do not know their names. He demands to investigate all the cases that refer to his family. As Botnari was involved in a loud case, many journalists wrote about this and these should thus wait to be summoned to the Prosecutor’s Office. It seems to me that they crossed the line. Until now the journalists were sued in civil cases, but now demand that these should be prosecuted criminally,” stated the journalist.
