Agriculture in Moldova needs to revert to natural ways, biotech expert

Alexandru Brătuțel, biotechnology expert with the Prometeu Experimental Center, believes that Moldova needs to adopt an eco-friendly policy in agriculture.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Alexandru Brătuțel spoke about the vulnerability of Moldovan agriculture, which is the main occupation for most of our country’s population. “We must understand we are not growing the crops that are right for us and that had been historically grown for centuries on this soil. Consumption distorted by several factors constitutes our daily diet today”, declared the biotechnology expert.

Alexandru Brătuțel called on the Moldovan Government and the Government of Romania to “gradually, but categorically” phase out chemicals in farming and revert to “natural agriculture”, adding that “it is much more effective than the chemical-based one”.

The researcher also spoke about the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, “which are designed for every country that tends towards prosperity and global collaboration, and to implement them requires effort”. “We have to change the mindset of the peasants, we have to properly manage the natural resources, something we have forgotten how to do. A bad habit reset policy is needed. Do no harm: this must be the motto for everyone who works with nature”, said Alexandru Brătuțel.

While the researcher insists that it is crucial to actively promote natural agriculture, he says that both farmers and the academia on both banks of the Prut River lost this knowledge. “I noticed this fact, because otherwise we wouldn’t see how plant masses just burn, how unprocessed waste, including agricultural waste, is spontaneously deposited”, remarked the biotechnology expert.

In his opinion, the practice of burning plant masses instead of returning them to the agricultural circuit, the application of chemically synthesized products that kill soil life “represent crimes against nature”. “The misdemeanor fines imposed by the government will not change much. The social relations between the nation and the leadership must be reset. We are drowning in garbage, we have become physically vulnerable, desperate and without expectations for a better future”, declared Alexandru Brătuțel.
