6,500 knee and hip replacement surgeries performed in 2024

Around 6,500 knee and hip replacement surgeries were performed in 2024 with funding from the compulsory health insurance funds. The number of surgeries is by about 1,400 higher compared to 2023, IPN reports.

The National Health Insurance Company (CNAM) said that most prosthetic surgeries were performed on the knee – about 4,500, and on the hip – over 1,900.

For the cases covered by the "Prosthetizing of musculoskeletal system" program, the CNAM transferred over 438 million lei in 2024.

The large joint prosthetic surgeries were performed in 22 medical institutions, contracted by the CNAM, of which 14 are public. Among these are the Emergency Medicine Institute, the Clinical Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopedics, the Cancer Institute, the Balti Clinical Hospital, etc.

The average cost of a treated case, covered by mandatory health insurance, exceeded 70,000 lei. This amount also includes expensive consumables.

A number of 6,671 cases of musculoskeletal system prostheses were purchased for 2025, in the amount of over 460 million lei, including expensive consumables of over 31 million lei.

The CNAM reminds that all the medically insured persons who have medical indications for prosthetizing and are on waiting lists have free access to such surgeries.
